What is the Unified Social Credit Code (USCC)? The DNA of Chinese Companies
In the complex world of Chinese business registration, names can change, addresses can shift, and legal representatives can be replaced. However, one element remains constant: the **Unified Social Credit Code (USCC)**. Known in Chinese as *tongyi shehui xinyong daima* (统一社会信用代码), this 18-digit alphanumeric string is the permanent "DNA" of every registered business entity in China.

The Single Source of Truth
Before 2015, verifying a Chinese company was a logistical nightmare. Importers had to track down separate numbers for business registration (issued by SAIC), tax registration (issued by the State Tax Administration), and the organization code (issued by the Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau).
The introduction of the **Unified Social Credit Code** changed everything. It consolidated these disparate identifiers into a single, mandatory code that serves as the company's legal ID for tax, customs, banking, and legal proceedings. For any serious buyer, the USCC is the starting point for China business license verification.
Unlike company names, which can be easily registered with slight variations or translated into English in multiple ways, the USCC is immutable. It is the only reliable way to ensure you are talking to the same legal entity mentioned in a China factory audit guide or a litigation report.
Anatomy of an 18-Digit USCC
The USCC is not a random sequence. It is a structured code that tells a story about the company's origin and legal nature. Each segment has a specific meaning:
Digit 1: Registration Authority
Identifies which government agency registered the company. **9** is the most common, representing the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). A **1** indicates the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and **5** indicates social organizations.
Digit 2: Entity Type
Describes the nature of the entity. For SAMR-registered businesses (digit 1 is 9), **1** usually means an enterprise (LLC or Corporation), **2** means a partnership, and **3** means a sole proprietorship.
Digits 3-8: Administrative Region Code
These six digits pinpoint the exact geographic region where the company was first registered. For example, **110105** is Chaoyang District in Beijing, while **440305** is Nanshan District in Shenzhen. This is a critical field for how to verify a Chinese supplier before importing.
Digits 9-17: Organization Code
The unique identifier for the specific organization within that region. This is the core "serial number" of the business.
Digit 18: Check Digit
A mathematically calculated character (digit or letter) used to validate the integrity of the previous 17 digits. If the math doesn't add up, the USCC is likely fake or mistyped.
Where to Find the USCC
If you are communicating with a Chinese supplier, you shouldn't have to hunt for this code. It should be readily available on several official documents:
Business License
Printed clearly at the top of every modern license (营业执照). If the license only shows a 15-digit number, it is either ancient or forged.
The Company Chop
Official company seals (chops) often include the USCC along the bottom curve. Check this against their license to ensure they match.
Tax Invoices (Fapiao)
Since the USCC is also the Tax ID, it appears on every official VAT invoice issued by the company.
Bank Account Records
Chinese banks require the USCC to open corporate accounts. The code will be listed on their account opening certificate.
Checking the USCC is one of the most important steps in our China supplier verification checklist.
Why Names are Dangerous for Search
Searching for a company by its English name is the biggest mistake foreign buyers make. Why?
- **No Legal Status:** English names have no official standing in mainland China unless registered for trademarks or specific export licenses.
- **Duplicates:** Dozens of companies might use the same English name (e.g., "Shenzhen Global Trade Co., Ltd").
- **Phonetic Variations:** The same Chinese name can be transliterated in multiple ways (Pinyin vs. Wade-Giles).
By contrast, the **Unified Social Credit Code** is unique. There is only one 91110105MA01B1GR3T in the entire country. When you use QINCheck to check any USCC instantly, you are bypassing the ambiguity of language and searching the official government ledger directly.
The QINCheck Advantage
"The USCC is the key that unlocks the rest of the company's data — litigation history, financial health, and ownership structures."
While you can manually check a USCC on the GSXT government portal, it is notoriously difficult for foreigners: it is only in Chinese, requires a Chinese IP or phone number for many features, and often suffers from heavy CAPTCHA barriers.
Summary
Think of the Unified Social Credit Code as the anchor of your due diligence process. Before you sign a contract, send a deposit, or commit to a long-term partnership, verify the USCC. It is the single source of truth that separates legitimate manufacturers from paper companies and scammers.
